The Monday Turnaround NFL Edition

Yes I realize Serena Williams lost her mind when physically threatening a line judge ,  (My how people forget about Jimmy Connors tirades or Andre Agassi hitting a ball at a line judge).  And Yes I know that sports writers were shocked to hear Michael Jordan use profanity and take verbal shots at former players during his Hall of Fame acceptance speech (I guess for all their writings they never  followed his career...go figure).  But I can honestly say who cares.  Football season (College/NFL) is here which means for the next month and a half, nothing else in sports matters.  So while ESPN tries to convince you that the NL Wild Card race is important (incidentally www.mlbtraderumors.com should stop reporting for awhile) I'm going to give you five things to think about in football every week starting with the NFL:

5.  The Vikings don't need Brett Favre to be an MVP to Win

Yes I know much was made about Brett Favre coming to the Vikings and un seating Tavaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels.  I know people were saying Favre could put up a lot of numbers with the offensive weapons he has surrounding him (Especially Percy Harvin and Adrian Peterson).  But Favre doesn't have to put up crazy numbers.  The Vikings already have an MVP candidate in Peterson .  Couple that with the talent of Percy Harvin and the Defensive front of  Kevin Williams,  Pat Williams, and Jared Allen (not to mention a weaker division) and there is no reason to think the Vikings can't go a long way in the playoffs or maybe even make a Superbowl run.

4.  The cynics are right about the Miami Dolphins and the Arizona Cardinals

Remember a famous coach saying "they are who we thought they were".  Well that's how I feel about the Cardinals and the Dolphins.  Yes both had remarkable turnarounds (the Dolphins winning the division after going 1-15 the previous season and Cardinals making a surprise Superbowl appearance).  Both had MVP candidate quarterbacks, and both were picked to continue improving with the beginning of this season.  And both laid eggs in their season debuts yesterday.  I stand by my original analysis of the Dolphins winning 6 games this year, and the Cardinals not even sniffing the playoffs.

3.  The Jets were the surprise team of the week

Say what you want about this being a hallow victory for the Jets.  Say what you want about this win coming against a maligned Texans team with the always injured Matt Schaub leading the way (not the answer at quarterback if you can't stay healthy).  Mark Sanchez looked poised, the Jets defense looked amazing, and 10-18 on third downs with a rookie is pretty impressive.  Yes I know it's only one game, but no one could have envisioned this happening.  For all the talk before the season, Rex Ryan really backed up his talk.

2.  No the Cowboys don't need T.O. to win

Really it was never an answer if the Cowboys offensive talent could put up points this season.  They have a number one receiver in Roy Williams and who really has a better running back rotation than the Cowboys do with Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice.  The question was if Tony Romo  without the aid of T.O. could be effective.  Well I think a career record of yards completed should quiet the doubters...at least for the next week.

1.  Jay Cutler was not the worst quarterback on the field yesterday.

Yes Jay Cutler was awful.  Actually he was worse than awful throwing 4 INTs, completing barely half his passes, and having a quarterback rating of 43.2.  And yes his last decision lead to the Bears ultimately losing the game.  But somehow everyone missed just how bad Jake Delhomme with his 14.7 quarterback rating a 4 INTs.  Often time Jake looked confused, and limited in arm strength.  As bad as Cutlerwas, he's only been in this offense since training camp, and is surrounded by a lot of unproven wide receivers.  And while everyone can and should question Cutler's decision making (I guess Denver got that one right) at least no one is questioning his arm strength.
