Derek Jeter Continues the Latest Yankee Assault on Old People and We Still Don't Care

Oh look, ESPN's leading story is Derek Jeter tying Lou Gehrig's record of hits as a Yankee .  What a surprise that they would go through any lengths necessary to cover anything Yankee related.  Ok, I realize that comes off as  incredibly sarcastic and uninformed, especially when talking about Jeter who has obviously been one of the best baseball players of all time (please don't try to argue that point).  After all, Jeter did pass one of the greatest baseball of all time and that is a tremendous feat...one that will be surpassed I'm guessing as early as tomorrow.  In fact the Yankees have been breaking quite a few records lately with Alex Rodriguez becoming the youngest player to hit 500 home runs. And more recently (last year to be exact) Rodriguez and Jeter broke long lasting records with Rodriguez becoming the first player with 35 homers and 100 RBIs in 12 seasons (one more than Babe Ruth) and Jeter setting the career hits record at the old Yankee stadium.

But do people still care? By people I mean the young ages of 19-37.  And I'm trying to be as honest and polite about that as possible.  Because when I clicked on foxsports.com Jeter's tying mark was the 4th headline down under Cassel in doubt for Chief's opener.  I quickly checked sportsillustrated and saw two picture story lines that read U.S. Open Quarter-finals (referring mainly to the ousting of latest 17 yr old tennis star Melanie Oudin)  and the other reading NFL Power Rankings with Tom Brady taking us for a walk down memory lane of who's the best quarterback in the league.

Forgive me but I thought the Yankees and company were still relevant outside of the world of baseball and its fans.  I mean as a fan of the game, I know it is a little easier to watch the playoffs when my beloved Atlanta Braves aren't making a run for the post season when the Yankees are good.  Throw in a rivalry game with the Red Soxand I'm all in.  But maybe I'm by myself.  Or maybe I'm a hypocrite for checking the matchups for the Tennessee/Pittsburgh game ahead of the Jeter highlights.  Maybe the world does care a little more about Shawne Merriman's dealings with Tila Tequila (don't you lose credibility for anything when you name yourself after a drink) and God's supposed hatred of Allen Iverson (I kid but if he thinks this is God's plan then they both have something to talk about) are more news worthy than seeing a living Legend.  The last time I checked the headlines they weren't far behind.
