Fan Reaction to Brett Favre's Decision is Exactly Why Vick Should Play
To be honest, I wasn't going to write on the Brett Favre situation, retirement, flirtation...or whatever you want to call it.
The subject was old and played. It was played in Green Bay with the Packers, it was played in New York with the Jets, and it was played with the Vikings in Minnesota. That's why I'm glad it's over from Favre's perspective (at least for now). But I had to address this because of fan reaction to Brett Favre with many saying that if Brett Favre had signed they would have stopped watching Vikings games. Reactions like these humor me because I can relate to the knee jerk reaction that fans make when a team decides to bring in a questionable player and upset team chemistry. I am after all a Cowboys fan that swore I wouldn't support the Cowboys if they brought in T.O. And after he caught his firt 50 yard catch, those sentiments went away quickly.
But I am especially humored with this sentiment coming from fans in Minnesota who actually believe there is anything else to do in Minnesota besides root for the Vikings. Like you would really turn off your tv sets if the Vikings went 6-0 at the beginning of the season with Favre under center (something entirely possible with the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, and St. Louis Rams being their first 3 road games). Don't fool yourself fans. Favre would have been a significant upgrade over Sage Rosenfels and Tavaris Jackson. That's why the Vikings were willing to flirt with bringing Favre in and the media circus that would ensue. Talent always wins out.
That's exactly why Michael Vick should be playing for some NFL team this season. Forget about what people say about Vick. No not about the dog fighting or his lying to Roger Goodell. I mean the talent. From a talent standpoint, Vickwas the most dynamic player in the NFL for a good 3 year span. From a statistics standpoint Vick's QB rating career wise is better than Derek Anderson, Kyle Boller, A.J. Feeley, Charlie Frye, Joey Harrington, and Luke and Josh McCown(not related). Those are the backup quarterbacks that I can think of with a least 1 year or more of starting in the league. Incidentally his QB rating and passing percentage are largely comparable to Eli Manningwho might become the most paid player in the NFL but whom I don't think sees another Superbowl in his lifetime without Plaxico on his team. But that's a different story. Let's stick to what we know. We know Vickis more talented than the aforementioned quarterbacks and many others who are just trying to make the team. And the sentiments of a few knee jerkers won't and or shouldn't stop teams from realising this.
